The Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) is a points-tested permanent visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, a state or territory, or a family member.

It allows you to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.

Key Features of Subclass 189

There are two streams under the 189 visa:

• Points-tested stream (most common)
• New Zealand stream (closed to new applications as of July 1, 2023)

Eligibility - Points-Tested Stream

To apply under the points-tested stream, you must:

• Be invited to apply (Expression of Interest via SkillSelect)
• Have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list
• Have a suitable skills assessment for that occupation
• Be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation
• Meet the points test pass mark (currently 65 points minimum)
• Have competent English
• Meet health and character requirements

• Wait for an invitation to apply (based on your points ranking)
• Apply for the visa within 60 days of receiving the invitation
• Await decision from the Department of Home Affairs
